On Saturday, October 24, 2026, the Teamsters National Black Caucus – Memphis Delta Chapter brought young people and adult chaperones together for our Annual Youth Civil Rights Tour to Birmingham, Alabama. The day connected a new generation with the history, courage, and collective action at the heart of the struggle for civil rights.

An Early Start and a Shared Purpose

The journey began early at Teamsters Local 667 in Memphis. Gathering for the trip was the first step in a day devoted to learning beyond the classroom, building connections, and understanding why the work of those who came before us still matters.

Learning From the Past

At the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the group explored exhibits documenting segregation, Black community life, and the movement for equality. The photographs from the visit capture both the historic displays and young people engaging with the stories they tell.

These lessons invite us to think about the people behind the history: families, students, workers, faith leaders, and neighbors who stood together for dignity and justice. Their example reminds us that progress depends on ordinary people choosing to take action.

Remembering and Reflecting

The day's photographs also include a group gathering outside Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Together with the museum visit, this moment offered a meaningful connection to Birmingham's civil rights history and the lives and sacrifices remembered there.

Food, Fellowship, and Lasting Connections

The photo story closes with lunch at Mugshots, a chance to share a meal and enjoy time together after the morning's learning. Moments of fellowship are part of what makes this annual tour a chapter tradition.

Carrying the Lessons Forward

The Memphis Delta Chapter believes that helping young people understand our history is an investment in our future. Civil rights and workers' rights share a commitment to dignity, opportunity, and a voice for every person. We hope this experience encourages our youth to keep asking questions, learning their history, and finding ways to serve their communities.

Thank you to our youth participants, parents and guardians, chaperones, volunteers, and everyone whose support helped make this year's tour possible. Your commitment helps us continue educating, empowering, and encouraging the next generation.
